Zwelakhe Sandile Mabuza is the inaugural Chairperson of the Nyukani Education Centre Alumni Association (NECAA), where he leads with a vision grounded in continuity, accountability, and purposeful legacy building. A proud Nyukanite, he matriculated in 2022, as NEC’s most inspirational learner, after serving as Head Boy of Nyukani Education Centre, as well as President of both the Learner Executive Council (LEXCO) and the Learner Representative Council (LRC) in 2021/22. These formative leadership roles shaped his belief that true leadership is not defined by position, but by the responsibility to build systems and opportunities that outlive one's tenure.
His university journey reflects consistent academic excellence and active student leadership. In his first year, he was the best-performing first-year student in his residence and among the top performers in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, receiving awards for multiple modules. He has served in multiple structures and portfolios within the Student Campus Council (SCC), including roles in Marketing and Public Relations, Accreditation and Language Facilitation, and as a student delegate in institutional leadership programmes. He currently serves as the SCC Deputy Chairperson of the Societies Liaison and International Students Office, a Dean's List recipient and Golden Key member, reflecting both academic distinction and commitment to professional growth.
In his capacity as Deputy Chairperson, Zwelakhe has co-developed a strategic proposal plan in partnership, aimed at advancing digital and innovation societies on campus. This initiative focuses on equipping students with digital research skills, promoting multilingual content creation, and preserving cultural heritage through digital archives, while also fostering youth outreach and training in underprivileged communities.
Beyond governance and finishing his academic journey, Zwelakhe has dedicated time to education development through tutoring high school learners in underprivileged communities, as well as lecturing in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. His leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in service, transformation, and access to opportunity, consistently bridging academic excellence with community impact.
As Chairperson of NECAA, he leads an Executive Committee mandated to reconnect alumni, strengthen institutional memory, and create meaningful pathways between past, present, and future Nyukanites.
"From memory to momentum. Passing the Nyukanite baton forward." ~Z.S Mabuza.
